Yesterday was one of those days that remind us why we do what we do. As we stood amidst the bustling activity at Kasikombe Primary School in Kampala, Uganda, we felt a deep sense of fulfillment and hope. We held an event for our Flow Forward program, distributing free eco-friendly reusable menstrual pads to the local community. The impact was immediate and profound.

From the moment we began setting up, there was a palpable energy in the air. We provided free transportation to ensure that families from all corners of the community could join us. Watching children and parents arrive together, some with excitement and others with curiosity, was heartwarming.

Our Flow Forward program is so much more than just distributing pads. It's about empowering local women by teaching them to make these reusable pads, giving them financial independence, and agency. Seeing these women share their stories and the skills they’ve gained was incredibly moving. They are not just earning an income; they are becoming pillars of strength and inspiration in their community.

A significant part of the day was our public health education session. We spoke openly about menstruation and women's reproductive health, aiming to break down the stigmas that have surrounded these topics for too long. Health should never be a stigma. When health feels approachable, we can prevent disease and keep our communities thriving. The response was overwhelmingly positive. They had so many questions, showing a deep desire to understand and embrace these topics. It was a powerful reminder of how vital it is to make women's health education accessible for all communities.

The personal stories from the girls were the most touching. Many spoke about how menstruation had previously caused them to miss school, leading to gaps in their education. With these new pads, they expressed relief and gratitude, knowing they could now attend school without interruption. Education and health are fundamental human rights. Girls, who make up almost half of our population, must be empowered with knowledge and access to reproductive health tools to reach their full potential. When we empower women and girls, we uplift entire societies.

As I reflect on the day, I feel immense gratitude for the incredible women who make the Flow Forward program possible, the dedicated staff at Kasikombe Primary School, and the vibrant community that embraced us so warmly. Your support, enthusiasm, and commitment are the driving forces behind our success.

An astonishing 600 tons of plastic are discarded every day in Uganda, with Kampala contributing substantially to this figure. According to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), a significant portion of this plastic ends up polluting water systems and blocking drainage. This not only hampers urban infrastructure but also endangers natural habitats.

In just one month, over 24 million pieces of non-biodegradable, single-use plastic from menstrual products flood Uganda's water systems and landfills, creating an environmental crisis. Our grassroots initiative to provide plastic-free, reusable menstrual pads, lovingly crafted from eco-friendly materials, presents a vital solution to this urgent problem. By embracing these sustainable alternatives, we are taking a significant step to protect our precious environment, empower women and girls, and nurture healthier communities. Through these efforts, we are not only addressing immediate needs but also sowing the seeds for a brighter, more sustainable future.
